The Public Information (PI) subcommittee carries the NA message beyond our meeting rooms. Its purpose is simple and its reach is broad: to make sure that anyone in Colorado who needs Narcotics Anonymous, and anyone in a position to refer someone to us, knows that NA exists, what we are, and how to find us.
What the Subcommittee Does
- Responds to requests for information from the public, the media, and community organizations
- Gives presentations to schools, universities, treatment centers, correctional and court programs, and civic groups
- Reaches the professionals an addict seeking help often talks to first, including physicians, counselors, social workers, probation officers, and clergy
- Keeps NA literature, meeting schedules, and helpline information stocked and current at public locations
- Staffs information tables and booths at health fairs, conferences, and community events
- Supports the regional helpline and website so a person looking for a meeting finds accurate, up-to-date information
- Coordinates with area PI subcommittees and with Hospitals & Institutions (H&I) so that efforts complement rather than duplicate one another
Guiding Principles
PI service is shaped by NA’s Twelve Traditions. In day-to-day practice that means:
- Attraction rather than promotion. PI informs; it does not advertise, recruit, or persuade.
- Personal anonymity is maintained at the level of press, radio, film, and other public media.
- No affiliation and no endorsement. NA does not align itself with treatment providers, outside organizations, or causes, and expresses no opinion on outside issues.
- Speaking for NA as a whole rather than for any individual member, group, or personal opinion.
Who Serves
PI is trusted-servant work done by NA members who volunteer their time. No professional credentials are required. Willingness, a working knowledge of the Traditions, the clean time suggested for a given position, and simple reliability matter far more than public-speaking experience. Most members start by helping at an event or shadowing a presentation before taking one on themselves.
